Six Victories: The Calais Project
This is a new project which is taking shape from our immersion with Rodin’s masterpiece The Burghers of Calais. In this piece, we are building our musical vocabularies and score from deep body-centered work with the postures, relationships, and embodied narrative of this sculpture. All the layers of this narrative inform our composition– the story of the Calais townsmen who sacrificed themselves for the life of their community as well as the story of Rodin’s commission and the active shaping of history through artmaking. Central to this story are some fundamental questions: What is a heroic act? What is a true victory? How are victory and loss perceived and constructed? How do art and conscious action change history, the flow of time and the perception of objects?
